Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
