Much like bad weather hit the north-west the night before, City overwhelmed the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their place at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This result marked successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capacity to manage league and European soccer with a limited squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this capability. The most obvious change came from Skinner at the interval as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Ex- City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were creatively abject and failed to register a solitary shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a strong situation after nine games.
